Video

I bought this Mixed CD pack for the DJ Sy "old school" mix but I fell in love with the Randall mix. At the time I didn't know a lot of the 1992 stuff so the Sy mix was new to me. Over time I discovered that this set was just one big anthem bashing set. This was not how the 1992 sets would have sounded in 1992, there would have been lots of weird and experimental tracks mixed in with a few of what we now know as anthems. At the time I bought this CD pack I hated this Randall techstep mix. I really hated that techstep back then. That whole sound was a "throw the baby out with the bathwater" time for jungle and I didn't understand it, I still really can't grasp why this happened. However that mix grew on me over time and I've come to love it. Unlike the Sy mix, this Randall mix is genuine. It's full of tracks that would have been played at this time because the time (1997) was this time. This is a real techstep set and its one of the best I've heard on a CD mix. I would say, it is the best next to the mixed version of the Torque album. The whole CD set is worth it for the Randall disc. The Vibes mix just reminds me of why I had to stop listening to happyhardcore, its bad. Gone are the days of real happyhardcore like M.A.N.I.C. "D.A.T. Jungle" and at this point who cares, just make you own real set of real happyhardcore by tracking down the records on discogs. No problem.
FluffbombPersonally I prefer the Sy mix of the three. In fact the Sy mix is probably my favourite retrospective old skool mix CD. There are a few scratch sections (i.e. over SL2 - Bassquake) that stand out. At the time, from what I remember, the looking back at the early hardcore tunes was a new idea and subsequently focused on the bigger tunes of the '91 to '94 period. A lot of those anthems had not been played out (or featured on CD releases) for a few years.Exactly mate! This Sy mix is outstanding. The scratching he does over Bassquake is incredible, and you're right. Back in '97 virtually nobody cared about "oldschool" (hey it was only six years ago back then). This was amongst the first compilations that paid respect to oldschool rave in a true way.And yeah, DAMN that scratching is incredible!
