Snow Ghosts haunt the scene with their debut, A SMALL MURMURATION, though the sounds on this album are anything but small. Instead the electric growl that starts "The Hunted" allows Hannah Cartwright's vocals to float atop it, building towards a climax that never comes. Instead, it shifts to the chilly "Murder Cries," a quasi-murder ballad reset for the bass generation, and into the beat-accompanied moody folk of "Secret Garden" or medieval leanings of "Gallows Strung." The guitar plucks of "Time Listens" lends itself to a gentler track, but a clicky rhythm helps keep the strings of "Untangle Me" in check, with "Ropery" taking it even further. The heartbreak of "And The World Was Gone" is carried by its thick, rubbery percussion, while the mutated vocals of "In the Deep" gurgle alongside a darkly atmospheric cello played sul ponticello. A strong, mesmerizing album.
